The Legend of Maria Cacao

By: Gilda Cordero-Fernando

Long ago, in a lush and verdant forest in the Bicol region of the Philippines, there lived a mystical and enchanting creature known as Maria Cacao. She was said to be the guardian of the cacao trees and possessed incredible powers. Maria Cacao was a beautiful woman with long flowing hair the color of rich chocolate and eyes that shimmered like cocoa beans. She resided within a massive cacao tree, its branches extending high into the sky. It was believed that she could control the growth and prosperity of the cacao plants, ensuring a bountiful harvest for the people of the land.

Farmers and chocolatiers from far and wide would come to pay their respects to Maria Cacao, seeking her blessings and protection. They would leave offerings of cacao beans, flowers, and other gifts at the base of her tree, hoping for her favor. Legend had it that Maria Cacao had the power to bring good fortune to those who respected and nurtured the cacao trees. She would grant them abundant harvests and guide them in the art of making delicious chocolate. However, she was also known to bring misfortune to those who harmed the forests or disrespected her sacred trees.

One particular story told of a greedy farmer who coveted the riches of the cacao trees. Ignoring the warnings and pleas of his fellow villagers, he decided to cut down a cacao tree that Maria Cacao cherished deeply. As soon as the axe struck the tree, a tempestuous wind swept through the forest, thunder roared, and the skies darkened. Suddenly, Maria Cacao emerged from the tree, her eyes glowing with anger. She unleashed her magical powers, causing the ground to shake and the rivers to flood. The greedy farmer and his actions had invoked her wrath, and he was swiftly punished. From that day forward, the villagers learned to revere and protect the cacao trees, knowing that Maria Cacao watched over them. Throughout the generations, the story of Maria Cacao has been passed down, reminding people of the importance of respecting nature and the abundance it provides. She continues to be a symbol of the rich cacao heritage in the Philippines, a guardian of the forests, and a protector of those who honor her trees.
